What is the sequence for "expiry date" in Europe (Britain)?

I have jar of pickles that I claim is expired (reads: expiry date:02.12.2011 LOT:4), but the merchant claims that is european coding and it is not expired. If you find it on an official web page please include the URL...THANKS!
